Down to 6

Calving so far has been pretty uneventful. Nothing out of the ordinary. A few backwards calves, a few upside down and a C-section last night in a heifer. There's 6 heifers left to go. Then I'm gonna throw darts at a map and figure out where my road trip will take me. Cameron and I like to hit the road before we get the bulls in and start branding. What? Cant believe we are already "thinking" about getting the bulls ready and branding! You can never be to prepared ya know.

Some randoms around the ranch yesterday and today.

A different type of mama and baby.

Saw this beauty in the heifer pasture. I'm sure eating afterbirth.

Gotta love him

My horse that is! And, well, the guy riding him too! HA!
Had to go get a cow in that was having some issues calving. Love how Leo can walk through 500 mama cows and calves and not disturb any of them.

The cow on the right walking is the one with issues. Can you can see little feet sticking outta her?

Calving is going great so far. We've had very agreeable weather. Well over half way in the heifers. There's baby cows EVERYWHERE in the both groups of cows. One of the bottle babies has a "new"  mama, and they are TOTALLY in love! :)

A glorious warm winter sunset. Yep, blue skies and sunshine today.

Lack of Sleep

We are in the midst of calving. Which means, very little sleep, lots of string cheese and coffee!
There are 27 calves in the heifers, as of now. The cows are just getting started.
The weather has been somewhat cooperative. Its been very mild and wet. I'd rather slime around in the mud, then slip around on the ice! I'm sure the cows would too. During the late night checks its been foggy. The heifers have been very good mamas and easy to deal with, until today! What a flippin' disaster! Last night we got home at 2am. Today headed out at 8am to feed cows, didn't get home until 5pm. ugh!
We lost a calf in the heifers. The heifer was a total loon! Had to get a horse to bring her in. She jumped the cattle guard! She tried to eat us for lunch! Geez. She ended up loosing her calf. Then we had two heifers calving, they tried claiming one calf! Had to bring them in. Did I mention it was POURING down rain!? and windy. But a balmy 60*!
I did get the whole barn cleaned! :)
And my bottle baby is not doing well. I think the milk replacer is bad. So, we had someone head to town to get a different brand. I am going to contact the company and complain to them about the sour milk. I've had issues with this brand before. sigh.
When we got home, I was cooking dinner and the sun was setting. Cant beat this at the end of a long, tiring day.
Hoping tonite and tomorrow will be better.

Bottle baby and Spook.

A rainbow to the east. Sunset to the west.

Here Kitty Kitty Kitty!

The wildlife guy was here last month setting up game/trail cameras looking for predators. He placed 3 cameras at the north end of the ranch where there is a lot of trees along the creek.
He came a few weeks ago to check the cameras. There was a lot of deer, coyotes, turkeys, phesents, quail, huns and a raccoon with a bob tail. But I got REALLY excited when I saw BOBCATS!
I got so excited, I went and bought me a game camera! I set it up along the creek by the house. I wanna check it every 5 minuets! HA! But, I'll wait patiently.

Here's a couple videos of the bobcat.

What a beautiful creature! I can't wait to see what I find on my camera....

Is it springtime yet?

The past week here we have had gorgeous weather. Its been muddy due to the inch of rain we had. But the frost is outta the ground so all that rain went in! The temps have been in the mid to upper 40's. with lows in the mid 30's! The only draw back is we still have hay to get home! But its been too muddy! We got a load of small bales for the barn today and tomorrow we will pluck away at the big stack.
Today was foggy and they are saying that the temps could reach the 50's by the weekend! Say whhhaaatttt??

Last nights sunset. Looking west outta the barnyard. Mud puddles! :)

Cows coming into feed this morning. We moved them into their calving pasture.

Here comes the fog. It was sunny!
