Sorting Pairs

For the past week we have been sorting steer pairs from heifer pairs. A few hundred every day. Its nice to be in the saddle all day, everyday.
As they say, a good working dog is better then 4 men/women. We have 4 amazing dogs. And I have to admit, that saying is so true! Gathering cows is a breeze. Most of the time! HA!
The puppies are doing awesome. Spook is like a cat, stalking her prey. And she is a nose bitter. And Bandit, well, she is just my awesome cowgirl. I can count on her to do anything for me.

Cows coming to the sorting lots.

Bandit keeping them in a group. It was a little windy as you can tell from Leo's mane!

Fall is in the air

I'm liking the cool mornings and evenings. Still warm during the day with those white fluffy clouds floating over head.
The Canadian Geese are starting to show up, the bucks are getting some dandy hat racks. And the fruit trees are loaded! And our winter prep work is starting to get into full swing.

Cracks me up to see the geese wandering around amongst the cows!

Little guy.

This is what I'm talking about!

2 year old nectarine tree. So loaded its hanging on the ground! Yummy!

After the storm

Wednesday we had a heck of a storm blow threw here. Wind, dust, thunder and lightning. But after a good storm, comes the beauty.
Yea, I had to wash the south side of the house, (vinyl siding rocks), wash windows and mow the sticks in the yard. Our internet has been hit and miss too.
When I was done mowing I saw this double rainbow. Gorgeous.

This picture was taken August 25, 2013. A haboob. Rolling across the meadow right next to the house!

Last evening the sky was just awash in yellow. It was so pretty.

Double rainbows.

The yellow sunset.

Gotta love living out in the middle of nowhere!

Quick and Wicked!

We had another wicked day yesterday. It went by quick but was wicked!
Went to a hay stack fire in the late morning. It was 101* out! Not sure how it started. It was last years hay. Still green. Maybe from a power pole they say.
Battled that for 6 hours, just to get home to a HUGE haboob headed up the canyon!
Sweaty, stinky and dirty. No power! Hey, we have a pool! And I'll be, the wind blew the cover off! Cool! Off come the clothes, dive in! Just to get called out again to lightning fires! Power back on today at noon! YEAH! COFFEE! :)

Skeeter Control

The mosquitoes have been eating me alive! UGH!
So, we called the mosquito control board and they came out this evening! Nice! Now I can sit outside and not get bit up!

Laying down smoke to check the wind.

Up close and personal!

A good way to get a big area covered.

The cows were not happy! They packed up and headed towards the corrals! HA!

Dusty and headed into the sunset.

It just got hotter!

Wheat harvest is well under way here in the dry, dry channeled scablands.
Its been in the 100's for, well, forever it seems.
Wednesday there was a combine fire. The combine caught on fire and burned about 10 acres of standing wheat. No one was hurt thank goodness. I don't have pictures of that because I was home alone and headed out in the tanker truck and met up with Cameron at the fire.
Today was 103* out. And another fire started by a combine. It didn't burn the combine, but about 200 acres of stubble and standing wheat.
Thank goodness for all our volunteer firemen and women!
Here's a few pictures on the way to the fire. Not much to see afterwards. Just black dirt.

The tanker truck. Its not pretty, but it holds 5000 gallons of water, an ice chest full of Gatorade and water! And the firemen are usually pretty happy too see us coming!
